Coushatta documenting their heritage

Daily News Staff Writer

The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is experiencing a cultural revival. In reacting to the degeneration of traditional language and culture, tribal leaders and community members have reached back into the past to save the story of their heritage so that their children’s children may know their history and identity.

“We will survive as a people as long as we speak the language,” a recently produced Coushatta Tribe historical documentary stated. Bertney Langley, Executive Administrator for the Heritage Department, agreed with the documentary, stating the need for the Koasati Language Project.
