Sheriff reminds locals of cell phone, driving laws

Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) Sheriff Ivy Woods is reminding locals that a law went into effect Aug. 1 that bans the use of social media sites via cell phone, and anyone caught violating the rule can be fined up to $175.

According to a press release from the sheriff, at any given moment in the nation, about 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving. Texting takes a person’s eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds, the equivalent, at 55 miles per hour, of driving the entire length of a football field blindfolded.
