ASSIST seeking space heater donations

The ASSIST Agency is asking the public for help with keeping the low-income and elderly members of the community warm this winter by donating new electric space heaters for distribution to those who have the greatest need.

“A lot of our elderly and low income residents – because they’re having to budget for quite a few items, like they’re rent, food, and medicine – a lot of times, at the end of the month, utility bills and their heating needs typically go by the wayside. Because they either don’t have the funds to run the big heaters or they lack heating units, a lot of our community residents are going to be cold,” said Edna Simar, Community Services Director.

The drive to collect new space heaters is now underway and ends Dec. 1. Applications for the heaters will be taken at ASSIST offices by appointment only beginning in December, with the date to be announced later. Distribution of the heaters will begin in late December. All donations go right to those in the community with the greatest need. To donate, or for more information, contact (337) 788-7550 (Acadia Parish), 824-7800 (Jeff Davis Parish) or (337) 898-9554 (Vermilion Parish).
