Shutdown interrupts farmer payments

Daily News Staff Writer

Although many Louisiana state agencies have remained largely intact during the government shutdown, one agency’s halt has some in the community sweating more than they would prefer.

The USDA and its subsidiary the Farm Service Agency (FSA) have completely shuttered their windows. The local FSA office in Jennings has posted a sign on its window stating the office will not open until Congress has restored its funds. The USDA website, all previous pages, reports, future price estimates, and other information are no longer available. This halt in services has the potential to be a major problem for farmers and livestock producers since they use reports sent out by the National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) to make critical decisions.
