Sowela partnership could create jobs

Daily News Staff Writer

Sowela Technical Community College is partnering with the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 106 to provide job opportunities of Jeff Davis Parish.

Beginning Nov. 4, Sowela’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development will start a fast-track compressed welding course at the Morgan Smith site in Jennings. The program will be offered Monday through Friday from 5-9 p.m. for 25 weeks, so that prospective students may still hold a day job while being trained in the evening. Students that complete the training will be recruited by Local 106 to enroll in a formal apprentice program that will prepare them to become journeyman pipefitters.
