Dogs’ win over Jena keeps season alive

Captains: Seniors Ravon Levi, Malik Williams, and Bryan Wilridge were captains for the Bulldogs.

Coin Toss: Jennings won the toss for only the fourth time this season. They deferred and received the second half kickoff.

Game Ball: The game ball goes to the team. The win was a total team victory.

Big Play: Quarterback Kaleb Chaisson found tight end Curtis Bell wide open and they teamed up for a 62-yard scoring play with time running out in the first half.

Big Hit: Sherman Gant and Malik Williams put a big hit on Jena running back Chevy Thorton late in the third quarter.

Longest Drive: The Bulldogs’ second scoring drive covered 73 yards in 13 plays and took six minutes off the clock.

Longest Run: Lemontay Mouton had a 29-yard run for the Dogs on their first possession of the second half.

Longest Pass: Curtis Bell hauled in a Kaleb Chaisson toss that covered 62 yards and was good for a touchdown.

Longest Return: Travis Etienne returned the kickoff following Jena’s first touchdown of 25 yards.

100-Yard Rusher: Lemontay Mouton gained 129 yards on 15 totes.

100-Yard Receiver: Curtis Bell caught three passes for 126 yards.

100-Yard Passer: Kaleb Chaisson completed seven of nine passes for 164 yards.

Turnovers: Jennings lost a fumble. Bryan Wilridge, David Reed and De’andrius Edwards recovered fumbles for the Dogs. Malik Williams intercepted a pass. The Dogs are now plus-seven in the turnover battle this season.

Penalties: Both teams were

penalized five times. Jennings lost 30 and Jena was penalized 45 yards..

Wheres Momma: After the Dogs were penalized last week for a photographer getting run over on the sidelines, I needed Momma again Friday night. A Jena Giant was penalized and tossed out of the game for fighting with a teammate. That’s a new one.

First Downs: Jennings had 17 first downs and the Maroon Wall held the Giants to nine first downs.

Third Down Conversions: Jennings was two of six on third-down conversions and Jena converted three of nine.

Old Dog: Judge William Knight has been a regular at the Dogs’ home games.

Old Bulldette: A former member of the Pep Squad, Jeanette Briggs, enjoyed the game with Old Dog Mike “Spanky” Briggs.

Walk Through: The Sam Houston Bearcats stopped at Jerry Simmons Stadium for a walk through on their way to Hammond. They played the Southeastern Lions Saturday. Bearcat coach Mike Collins and head Dog Rusty Phelps are good friends. Collins’ son John Michael is a Bulldog assistant.

Tuff Schedule: Eight of Jennings’ opponents this season made the playoffs. Four are still playing and advanced to the regional round.

Huge Thanks: A great big, huge thanks to our veterans. Those who paid the ultimate price, those who served and those serving this great country now. Thank you for our freedom.

Looking Good: The end zones had a nice look with Bulldogs spelled out in each one. Good job.

Series: Jennings leads the series, 1-0.

Streaks: The Dogs have won their last seven games.

Taste of the Town: We were treated with Cormier’s Specialty brisket, boudin, mouth-watering cracklins and goodies. Good groceries. Thanks to principal Mr. Ben Oustalet

On Deck: Rematch. The Dogs and Westlake Rams will take the field after playing one another in week 10 for the district championship.

Higher Stakes: After playing for the district championship two weeks ago, the Dogs and Rams are battling for the right to advance to the Quarterfinals, which is one step closer to everyone’s goal – the Superdome.

Parish: Congratulations to all four parish teams for making the playoffs. Good luck to Elton, Jennings, and Welsh as they try to move to game 13.

Week 11, 1998: Jennings Bulldogs 6, Breaux Bridge Tigers 26. Brent Broussard caught a three-yard touchdown pass. Clarence Matthews led the Dogs with 79 yards rushing. Cody Bergeaux recovered a fumble. The Tigers’ Domanick Davis was the game’s leading rusher with 160 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
