Today, we give thanks

For some, Thanksgiving brings to mind early European settlers feasting with native Wampanoags after a cruel first year in America. For others, it brings to mind the story of Abraham Lincoln asking his fellow countrymen to celebrate what good remained in the nation and people’s hearts after the bloody Civil War.

Hopefully, for you, it is a day when you truly take stock of what is most precious in this life and the everyday blessings you receive. Life is not always easy and sometimes it is hard to see just how much good we have been blessed with. We should actually be appreciative every day for what we do have. Still, Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with those who are dearest to you and celebrate the good things in life.

Two things we at the Jennings Daily News are always thankful for are the people of this area and the many communities we serve. Not many newspapers will say they enjoy the community they serve. So many areas are disconnected, with neighbors treating one another as strangers. In Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) and its outlying areas, though, we have come to know so many of you by name. We know our churches and where they are located; the teachers and administrators in each school; the officers of local civic groups and organizations; the business owners and their employees; and so many more individuals who make this area a great place to work and live.

We know you could choose to read or share your life with another newspaper in this parish or Southwest Louisiana. Instead, you share your life with us and we enjoy every moment: the weddings and births; school accomplishments; pageant winners; agricultural gains; business news; anniversaries; sporting events; club meetings; church events; fundraisers; and so many other aspects of life that we are privileged to write and read.

So as we all give thanks today, we want you to know we are thankful for you.

We also hope today you realize just how many good things are in this life. Whether you are thankful to have a roof over your head, the love of friends and family or even only the shirt on your back, consider that there is always some blessing you could count.

From everyone at the Jennings Daily News, we wish you a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving.
