Dear Editor,

Our nation, and its future, will depend not just on education of our youth, but on truthful  education of our youth.

Noah Webster, called the father of American scholarship and education, and whose name appears on the Merriam-Webster dictionary, said “Society requires that the education of youth should be watched with the utmost scrupulous attention. Education, in great measure, forms the moral character of men, and morals are the basis of good government”.

Our founding fathers were all highly educated men, and they believed that a diligent search for highly educated men in many fields should be made as we select people to represent us in Washington. [Not all Lawyers, whose job it is by their education, to argue and battle for their side to win at all costs]

Our early public education system was one of the best in the world and soon became the envy of other Nations. Early education was primarily from learned monks in Monasteries and their pupils became educators with a high sense of moral values, often with the Bible used as a reference base. The foundation was both, that of education, and morality!

A Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, came to America in 1831to decipher the secret of America’s enormous economic success as a young nation. He was so taken with our public education system that he wrote extensively about the schools as a unique and powerful tool, to fuel a productive new nation. Unlike the schools in Europe, American schools taught the children values, he noticed, and there was extensive use of the Bible in public schools so that morality could be emphasized. He appreciated our Democratic Republic, and our superb constitution, but was more impressed with our respect for morality both within our churches and within our government. He said of his visit: “America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great”! John Adams apparently had similar thoughts when he said,” Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other “.

With the above thoughts in mind please close your eyes and think of the news headlines in recent days, weeks, and years. Are we still a country with high moral values, are our public schools teaching morality, are unions and political pressures altering text books so as to alter actual facts of past history? Have big money sources guided our major universities and our Government, to instill Socialism, bordering on Communism, into their students? Has our Government with help from our Supreme Court now justified the killing of human beings, while sending to jail anyone who is cruel to animals? The answer to the first 2 is No! To the other questions the answer is yes! There is an answer to most of our downward spiral that I would love to have discussed by citizens who care, but news space is scarce. My e-mail is if any of you would like to share your input or concerns. Or, send your thoughts to our local paper; they do try to print most of what is sent in, even though space is often limited. One way or the other our country needs your help, and your thoughts; it will not survive traveling its current path!
