One Big Inning: Benoit dominates Knights on mound, Dogs use 5-spot in fifth to win

The Jennings High School Baseball team needed a win in the worst way Tuesday night, and all they did was knock off 2016 Class 3A Runner-Up South Beauregard 5-3 behind a dominant pitching performance from senior Andrew Benoit, coupled with a 5-run fifth inning against UL-Lafayette signee Logan Savoy to claim the win.

Benoit tossed a complete game 4-hitter, allowing only 2 earned runs and fanning 5 in his 7 innings of work. The Jennings defense shined behind Benoit, with shortstop Kendrick Lejeune making a series of highlight reel plays, and an outfield consisting of Luke Benoit, Kamran Richard and Emile Stretcher running down fly balls in the gap.

“Andrew was just dominant tonight and he had everything working for him from the get go,” said Jennings coach Jude Bertrand. “He gave us the chance we needed, and Kole Myers called an absolutely fantastic game behind the plate. We were able to throw off-speed stuff in fastball counts against their hitters, and that’s big because they have 4 or 5 guys who can run it out of the park at any given time.”
