Powerful performance: CMT tour visits SOWELA, advocates higher education

High school students from across Jeff Davis Parish were invited to SOWELA Technical Community College Morgan Smith site in Jennings Thursday afternoon to take part in Country Music Television’s (CMT) Empowering Education Tour.

The tour which will visit eight community and technical colleges in Louisiana is designed to promote the schools it visits and the importance of education to local high school students. Students engaged in a panel discussion with current SOWELA students as well as enjoyed performances by local band Kegan Navarre and Louisiana Traditions, as well as country recording artist Courtney Cole.

Vice President of Public Affairs for CMT Lucia Folk said the network is passionate about advocating education to students in smaller communities like Jennings, who may not receive the push to pursue higher education as their counterparts in larger cities.
