Roanoke native Cpl. Edward Taylor Carter, 99, is the oldest living veteran residing at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home (SLVH), but still recalls his service like it was yesterday.
Carter was born Oct. 4, 1922 and raised in Roanoke. He is a WWII veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946.
“My father, Glenn Carter, was a rice farmer and I grew up on a farm,” he said. “I enlisted in the Army and worked at Ft. Sam Houston Hospital. In 1943, I was promoted to the rank of Corporal and sent overseas.”
