LAKE ARTHUR - It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Elton Gene Hargrave announces his passing from this life on Sept. 20, 2018, at the age of 77.

A Mass of Christian burial for Elton Gene Hargrave, Sr., 77, of Lake Arthur will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at 2 p.m., with Father Roland Vaughan officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Lake Arthur beginning on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 2-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Visitation will resume on Monday, Sept. 24, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 2 p.m.

Elton will be laid to rest in St. Anthony Cemetery following his service.

Elton was born in Kaplan to Adam Hargrave and Evelyn Duhon Hargrave on Sept. 26, 1940. He spent many years recovering furniture and restoring antiques at his upholstery shop. In his younger years, Elton loved to play music with his band, Elton and the Eltradores. He was a faithful member of his church, where he loved to sing in the church choir. Elton also loved listening to all different kinds of music, doing woodwork, watching all sports and especially attending Super Bowl parties. Most of all, he loved the time he was able to spend with all of his family, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watching his grandchildren play sports or just visiting. He was a kind and loving soul who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Elton is survived by his two sons, Elton G. Hargrave, Jr. (Belinda) of Lake Arthur and Trinni Gene Hargrave (Danette) of Lake Arthur; his daughter, Madonna Hammond (Billy) of Jonesboro; his sister, Evelyn “Meon” Foreman of Maurice; his 12 grandchildren, Crystal Hargrave, Shaun Hargrave, Trent Hargrave, Trey Hargrave, Kelly Orgeron, Stephen Orgeron, Jr., Corey Orgeron, Jacob Orgeron, Abby Orgeron, Brad Duprie, Walter Hammond and Andrew Hammond; and his seven great-grandchildren, Kinsley Hanks, Kayelyn Hanks, Mika Duprie, Ava Gary, Nash Duprie, Emerson Orgeron and Brynlee Orgeron.

Elton was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Evelyn Duhon Hargrave; his beloved wife, Judith Ann Hargrave; his two brothers, Nelson Hargrave and Wilson Hargrave; and his two sisters, Margaret Hargrave and Beverly Henry.

Carrying Elton to his final resting place will be his grandsons, Shaun Hargrave, Trent Hargrave, Trey Hargrave, Stephen Orgeron, Jr., Corey Orgeron and Jacob Orgeron.
