JDSO reminds public of Share-Cam Initiative

The Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) reminds the public of the benefits of participating in the Share-Cam Video Surveillance System Initiative. The program was introduced several months ago, however it is being re-introduced in light of the holiday season.

Sheriff Ivy Woods explained that the purpose of implementing the Share-Cam video system is to work alongside members of the community in an effort to provide extended criminal protection to people and property.

“It’s important for the public to understand how valuable video surveillance is when it comes to apprehending criminals,” said Woods. “It’s one of the most effective methods when it comes to convicting suspects caught in the act of committing a crime. By providing the sheriff’s office with the location of private security cameras for homes or businesses, the Share-Cam Initiative empowers law enforcement with information needed to help deter and solve crimes quickly and ultimately catch criminals faster.”

Participating in the Share-Cam system is 100 percent voluntary, as the cameras are privately owned. Citizens may choose to allow the sheriff’s office permission to access footage from their private video surveillance cameras. Woods emphasized that signing up for Share-Cam does not provide the sheriff’s office with direct access to private surveillance systems.

“Any information provided is confidential and will not be disclosed to non-law enforcement personnel,” explained Woods. “If necessary, detectives or deputies will contact the camera owner directly, using information provided on this site, to request video evidence relevant to a criminal investigation. While privately owned cameras can help solve crimes, public participation can help to prevent it altogether.”

At any time, participants may request the sheriff’s office remove their record from the Share-Cam Initiative and deny access to the video or video system without requiring any legal action or court order. Participants may be contacted to verify participation and then followed up once a year to update information.

If you currently utilize private video surveillance at your home or business and would like to participate in the Share-Cam Initiative, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (337) 821-2100 or visit www.jdpso.net. Participants will receive a free sticker to display outside of their home or business, indicating they have signed up for the program.
