Funeral services for Mr. Joseph L. Baker, 92, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, in Immaculate Conception Church, with Rev. Damian Fernando officiating.

Visitation will be held at Miguez Funeral Home in Jennings from 3:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, and will continue on Friday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. until time of services.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel.

Military honors will be held at the funeral home before leaving for the church.

Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Kaplan.

Mr. Baker passed away at 10:44 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2018, in his residence.

Mr. Baker was a 68-year resident of Jennings, moving here from Kaplan. He graduated from Kaplan High School and received his B.A. from S.L.I. (now ULL). He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired school teacher for Jeff Davis Parish School Board for over 30 years. He went on to work for the Jeff Davis Sheriff’s office for 10 years after retiring from teaching. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Mr. Baker loved his family and was a very honest and upstanding gentleman. He had a very solid loving marriage of 70 years to his wife, Doris. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and taught them many things. He had a very good sense of humor. He loved gardening, reading and music. He enjoyed coaching a girls softball team for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris Broussard Baker of Jennings; three daughters, Shirley Baker (James) Parker of Lafayette, Peggy Baker Mallett of Jennings and Karen Baker (Randy) Daigle of Jennings; one son James (Mary) Baker of Lafayette; one sister, Lena Baker (Lloyd) Vincent of Kaplan; eight grandchildren, Laurie Parker Glotta (Ernest), Jeffrey Powell Parker, Jared Paul Istre (Shanna), Chad Michael Mallett, Jason Patrick Istre (Jaime), Amanda Brooke Mallett, Michael James Baker (Andrea), and Scot Daniel Baker (Katie); and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Baker and Agnes LaPoint Mire; one sister, Virgie Lee Baker; and a brother, Jay D. Baker.
