MERMENTAU - Anyone in need of a helping hand can look to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The church has scheduled its semi-annual clothing giveaway for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.

“We have clothes ranging in sizes for small babies all the way through adult size 3X,” said coordinator Yolanda Poullard. “Some clothes are brand new and some are gently used, but all are in great condition.”

A variety of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing will be on site, including shoes, belts and jewelry. Any person from surrounding communities are welcome to attend.

“People can take what they want at no charge,” said Poullard. “ We just ask that if they can’t use it themselves, please pass it on to someone who can.”

She said plenty of other items will be available as well.

“We will have much more than clothing to offer this year,” said Poullard. “Generous donors have sent personal hygiene supplies such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash and bath products.”

She said they have received donations of cleaning supplies all the way from New Orleans.

“We will also have food items such as canned goods and much more,” said Poullard.

Organizers would like to remind residents that the church is available to help year round, not only on scheduled giveaway days.

“We are always willing to help at anytime,” she said. “We are here to assist people who may be affected by tragedies such as house fires or even floods at any time of the year. That’s what makes up New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. We are here to help.”

The idea to begin this project started with Poullard’s young daughter wanting to help others.

“It all started when my daughter, Alanah, decided she wanted to clean out her closet and donate the things she no longer used to those who needed it,” she said. “It began with just a few people donating a couple items and it has now grown into a much bigger operation.”

Anywhere from 15-30 families have been helped at previous events. Once word spread about Alanah’s Box, donations have poured in from far away places, with others wanting to do what they could to help. The church continues accepting donations all year long and they are willing to assist whenever it is needed.

The church is located at 604 Church St. near the Fifth Street intersection. For more information or to donate items, call (337) 329-1335.
