The process will soon get underway to decide the name of Ward II’s upcoming pre-k through sixth grade campus.

In a press release from the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, the naming processes and timelines required by board policy will begin Sept. 23.

Names for the newly planned elementary school will be solicited from the voters of the Jennings School Bond Election District. Jennings residents may pick up a petition to nominate a name from the school board office Sept. 23-Oct. 4 if they wish to submit a name for consideration. A minimum of 50 signatures of current registered Jennings School Board Election District voters supporting the name must be submitted to the school board office no later than 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7.

A letter of recommendation for consideration of the proposed name must also be submitted with the completed petition.

Oct. 14-21, Superintendent Kirk Credeur will publish the verified suggested names for the benefit of the public.

The school board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee will then host a public meeting at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, to discuss the recommendations. A maximum of 10 persons on each side, for or against, will be drawn from registered voters showing their voting card at attendance. Each person will be allowed two minutes per person to voice their concern or support of the name being recommended for consideration.

The Building and Grounds Committee will use public input to recommend a name for the new school to the full school board at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 meeting.
