Alice Elizabeth Stackhouse

Alice Elizabeth Stackhouse, born Sept. 21, 1930, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2021, at the age of 90.

She was a Jennings native, the daughter of Claude Earl Stackhouse and Ama Lee Fears Stackhouse. She was a graduate and valedictorian of Jennings High School and graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a bachelor of music degree in piano performance and later earned the master of music degree in piano performance, with majors in theory and music history, as well.

While Miss Stackhouse had hundreds of friends and students, the current pandemic situation precludes the visitation and funeral services that would ordinarily be held. Private family services will be followed by burial in the family plot in Jennings under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings..

Upon completion of her studies, Miss Stackhouse returned to Jennings and opened her piano studio, teaching children and adults basic and advanced piano, both practice and theory. Her music career included membership in Sigma Alpha Iota honorary music fraternity. She served for 15 years as secretary of the LSU Music Alumni Association. She was also active in the Lake Charles Piano Teachers Association, Louisiana Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. She served as Baldwin Junior Keyboard Award state chairperson from 1968 to 1975 and was on the certification committee and rally board of LMTA for many years, as well as serving on the LMTA executive committee.

She judged musical competitions statewide. She was on the faculty of the American College of Musicians and judged many national piano playing auditions. She was recognized by the American College of Musicians with inclusion in that organization’s Hall of Fame.

Miss Stackhouse served as pianist for the Jennings First Baptist Church for many years.

She was especially proud of her students, many of whom continued with their musical studies. Her students won many awards at state and local and national competitions. These students became music/piano professionals, church pianists and enjoyed playing for their friends and family.

In addition to her musical career, Miss Stackhouse was a licensed insurance agent, real estate agent and real estate broker. She was a member of the Louisiana and National Realtor associations and a charter member of the Live Oak chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was well-known for her love of dachshunds, raising many over the decades. She will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, as well as her musical and teaching talents.

Alice Stackhouse was a lifelong fan of LSU football and kept season tickets for decades. When she couldn’t attend games, she watched them on television and showed her team spirit by appearing often in LSU gear and had many LSU-themed decorations.

Miss Stackhouse was preceded in death by her father, Claude Earl Stackhouse; her mother, Ama Lee Fears Stackhouse; and her brother-in-law, Dr. George Robert Smith of Lafayette.
