Funeral services for Hattie Mae Monroe-Simien, 75, of Jennings were held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at Semien-Lewis Mortuary, 819 N. State Street in Jennings, with Reverend Edward Alexander, Jr., officiting.

Visitation with family and friends was held from 8 a.m. until time of the funeral.

Burial was in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary.

Hattie Mae Monroe-Simien was born to the late Gus Monroe, Sr., and Navana Bias-Monroe on Dec. 29, 1943, in Rayne. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and became a member of Maryland Chapel CME Church in Branch. On Oct. 17, 1964, she was united in holy matrimony to Wallace J. Simien, Jr. In 1967, she and her husband relocated their family to Morgan City. In 1983, supporting her husband’s career change, she moved her family to her husband’s hometown of Jennings. Hattie enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining her family and friends. She joined Christian Baptist Church in Lake Charles on March 20, 2011, under the leadership of Pastor Edward Alexander, Jr. After enduring a long, excruciating battle with dementia, God called her home on Nov. 1, 2019, at Holly Hill Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Sulphur.

Left to mourn her passing and cherish her memories include her three children, Wallace Simien III (Sandra) of Jennings, Wanda Simien-Avery (Daryl) of Dallas, Texas, and Wyzetta Simien of Dallas, Texas; one sister Mary L. Demuchette (Eulise) of Crowley; three brothers Gus Monroe, Jr. of Houston, Texas, Leo Monroe, Sr. (Mildred) of Houston, Texas, and Alvin H. Monroe Sr. (Dollie) of Crowley; one brother-in-law, Wallace Davis, Jr of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Walden J. Avery of Chicago, Ill., Chelsea Simien of Jennings and Wesley J. Simien of Natchitoches; one great-grandson, Keiden J. Levi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace J. Simien, Jr.; her parents, Gus Monroe, Sr. and Navana Bias-Monroe; her father-in-law, Wallace Simien, Sr.; her mother-in-law, Edmonia Simien; her sister, Elmira Champange; her sister-in-law Olivia A. Monroe; and her brother-in-law, John Simien.
