Another beautiful rose was called home from our family’s rose garden on Nov. 5, 2022, from The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice in Lafayette to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Celebration of Life services for Shirley A. Carey, 78, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, in the church chapel at Semien-Lewis Mortuary, located at 819 N. State Street in Jennings, with Rev. Carl M. Fontenot, Sr., officiating.

Visiting with family and friends was held in the chapel from 1 p.m. until the time of celebration services.

Burial was in Benevolent Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary of Jennings.

Shirley was born Dec. 15, 1943, in Jennings to the late Lodee Brown and the late Clifton Carey. She was a native of Jennings and a resident of Baton Rouge.

Shirley was baptized at an early age at Mount Triumph Baptist Church in Jennings. She had a kind heart and was always willing to help others. She enjoyed working in her beautiful yard.

Shirley served on the advising board for the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging. She was employed by the Penniman family in Baton Rouge and was the recording secretary at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Baton Rouge for 27 years under the leadership of the late Rev. A.L. Pitcher and the late Rev. T.E. Brown. After the deaths of her pastors, she reunited with Mount Triumph Baptist Church in Jennings under the leadership of Pastor Carl M. Fontenot, Sr.

Shirley leaves to cherish fond memories to a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Also, her extended family, the Penniman and Atkins whom she adored, and many loving friends and neighbors.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Lodee Brown and Clifton Carey; her brother, Wilbert Lewis; her sister, Kathlyn McZeal and her two nephews/Godsons, Earon Quinton Williams and James Garland Brown.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Mount Triumph Baptist Church Building Fund in Jennings. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.semien-lewismortuary.com.
