Bobby was born in Elton on his family’s farm, founded by his grandfather, Henry Tietje. He lived his entire life there and had the good fortune to die there in his home. After Elton High School graduation, Bobby left home for a stint in the Navy to serve on the USS Ranger during World War II. Upon discharge, he returned to the farm to grow rice, cattle, soybeans and crawfish, along with corn, wheat and melons that all helped to provide for raising the fourth generation of kids. He farmed with his father, Walter, and his brother, Sonny.

He married Gerre Edwards and they raised their eight children on the farm. In addition to farming, Bobby had a career as a rural letter carrier. He was active in St. Paul parish where he served as an usher, member of the Knights of Columbus and was on the church council. He enjoyed being a Boy Scout Master and spent many Thursdays around the fire at Camp Edgewood. Bobby was a member of the GMC Classic Motor Homes Association and he loved to travel.

He was a generous, skillful and fun-loving man, always with a helping hand and a smile on his face. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish Bobby’s memory include one sister, Doodle Allen of Elton; his four sons, Matt Tietje and wife, Cindy, of Sandy, Utah, Michael Tietje of Elton, John Tietje of Elton and Malcolm Tietje and wife, Danica, of Prairieville; three daughters, Monica Tietje and husband, Charlie Kaough, of Austin, Texas, Tina Tietje Monceaux and life partner, Cherie, of Jennings and Mary Lee Bufkin, of Bellville, Texas; daughter-in-law, Jina Tietje of Lemont, Ill.; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
