(The Center Square) — The price of natural gas at the Henry Hub in Louisiana averaged $2.93 per million British thermal units from June through August, about 6% less than last year, even though the Lower 48 U.S. states recorded the hottest July on record and the demand for electricity soared.
(The Center Square) — Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming has referred about $12.1 million in school expenditures for further review, including additional employee payments, meals, gifts and payments categorized as lobbying or political expenses.
Art appreciation abounded Thursday when community members and artists gathered in downtown Jennings for an evening of good food, comradery and the arts. Zigler Art Museum held its annual Fine Wine and Dine fundraiser to help support its mission of enhancing cultural experiences in Jeff Davis Parish. Attendees enjoyed a lovely meal paired with various wines, spoken word from artist Melissa Bonin and a live auction.

Since today’s elementary students marvel that their teachers “are from the 1900s,” I was profoundly affected when, just days ago, I flipped my calendar to September and was reminded of my own grandmother’s birth….in 1896.

Big plays came from some of Jeff Davis Parish’s youngest athletes recently as Jennings hosted a full day of peewee football. Young athletes took to the field, with divisions ranging from 5-6-year-old flag football to 11-12-year-old tackle.

Ilistened this weekend as the television announcers declared that presidential candidate Donald Trump was landing his 747 in Mobile, Ala. They said the city’s name as if it was a Mo-BUL phone, or a Mo-BUL blood drive unit or a Mo-BUL military detachment.

OPELOUSAS — The Elton Indians football team showed their speed, while the JS Clark Leadership Academy showed their athleticism on the new artificial turf at Donald Gardner Stadium Thursday in Opelousas. Elton RB Makelin Lemoine left his mark on the turf with two long touchdown runs while the Bulldogs made some great catches in the Indians’ 32-26 win.
Branded Softball continues to make its mark on the diamond, with both the 12U and 14U teams bringing home runner-up finishes in back-to-back tournaments. The two teams first competed in the LA Glory MVP Classic in Eunice, where both squads went undefeated throughout the day to advance to their respective championship games.
Foo Fact of the Game: Iowa outgained Jennings 290 to 240 in total yards for the game and led 25-22 at halftime. Jennings would score 14 points in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 36-25 Homecoming win over the defending Division II State Champs.
WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds will put their 3-1 record on the line Friday night when they commute to DeQuincy to face the 1-3 Tigers in a non-district battle. Welsh had a blowout win over Vermilion Catholic last week while the Tigers were blown out by the Elton Indians.
District 3-3A play heats up this Friday night as the Jennings Bulldogs travel to Lake Charles to battle the Washington-Marion Charging Indians in a crucial midseason Louisiana high school football showdown. Head Coach Bret Fuselier’s Bulldogs (2-2) look to carry their momentum onto the road, while first-year Head Coach Sterling Mobley aims to orchestrate a statement victory for his Chargin Indians (1-3) on their home turf. With both teams eager to cement their standing in the district race, this Week 5 clash at Washington-Marion High School promises an intense battle from the opening kickoff.

The 340B Drug Pricing Program was supposed to help safety-net hospitals serve vulnerable patients by letting them buy prescription medicines at a discount.
ELTON — The Elton Town Council approved a new golf cart ordinance that brings the town's regulations into compliance with Louisiana law and sets local registration fees, following a detailed presentation by Town Attorney Michael Holmes. Holmes explained that the ordinance is based on Louisiana Revised Statute 32:299.4 and establishes the requirements for operating golf carts on public streets within the Town of Elton. Under the ordinance, golf cart owners must register their vehicles with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles if they intend to drive them on public roads. Operators must also provide proof of registration and liability insurance before receiving authorization from the town.

Obituaries

After a brief illness, Robert Courville, 92, died on Sept. 13, 2026 at his home in Roanoke surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026 at 2 p.m.

Margaret Myers Mallett, a devout Catholic, was the second of nine children born to Luke, Sr. and Mamie Kinney Myers on April 17, 1936 in Jennings in Jeff Davis Parish. As a teen, she cared for her maternal grandparents, Elvina and Leo Paul Kinney. After graduating from Jennings High School, she attended SLI (now UL Lafayette) where she met Joseph “Joe” Mallett also from Jeff Davis Parish. On August 4, 1956, they were one of the first couples married at the newly formed Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jennings, of which her family was a founding member. Margaret and Joe began their family in Welsh before moving to Baton Rouge for Joe’s work. In Baton Rouge, they were a founding family of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Upon moving to Wilson in East Feliciana Parish, they joined Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Jackson where she was active with the Altar Guild and was affectionately known as the “Donut Lady”.
Mary Epperly passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at the age of 83. She was born in Roanoke and resided in LaPlace.
