Police: Two dead after warehouse explosion shakes Houston

HOUSTON (AP) — A massive explosion Friday leveled a warehouse in Houston, leaving at least two people dead, damaging nearby buildings and homes and rousing frightened residents from their sleep miles away, authorities said.

The explosion happened about 4:30 a.m. inside a building at Watson Grinding and Manufacturing, which makes valves and provides thermal-spray coatings for equipment in various industries, authorities said. The building was reduced to burning rubble and debris, and some of the surrounding buildings suffered heavy damage to parts of their walls and roofs.

La. woman accused of beating 93-year-old in video

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Charges have been upgraded against a Louisiana woman accused of beating a 93-year-old grandmother in an alleged assault caught on video.

Lottie Morgan, 57, was expected in court Friday to face a felony charge of aggravated second-degree battery, news outlets reported.

In a short video shared online and with police, Morgan is allegedly seen beating a person with a belt inside a home earlier this month. Family member Lenny Morgan told WAFB-TV he recorded the video. He said Lottie Morgan has been the 93-year-old’s caregiver.

LSU’s Orgeron agrees to new 6-year, $42 million contract

BATON ROUGE (AP) — LSU coach Ed Orgeron has agreed to a new contract extension worth more than $7 million annually and which runs through the 2026 season, the university announced on Friday.

The new six-year agreement comes on the heels of the Tigers’ 15-0 national championship season that concluded earlier this month with a 42-25 victory over Clemson in the national title game in New Orleans.

Contract language, which remains subject to approval by the board of supervisors, calls for a base salary of $6 million plus various performance-related bonuses.

Pentagon: 34 US troops had brain injuries from Iran’s strike

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon said Friday that 34 U.S. troops were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries suffered in this month’s Iranian missile strike on an Iraqi air base, and that half of the troops have returned to their military duties.

Seventeen of the 34 are still under medical observation, according to Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman.

Trump attends anti-abortion rally

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump called it his “profound honor” on Friday to be the first president to attend the annual anti-abortion gathering in Washington called the March for Life.

He used his speech to attack Democrats as embracing “radical and extreme positions” on abortion and praised those attending the event, saying “unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House.”

On Friday night the women of the Klan were hostesses to an information Washington party given to a number of friends and out-of-town visitors. A capacity crowd was present to enjoy the pleasant hours.

The lodge rooms were artistically and appropriately decorated with souvenirs of Washington, flags and flowers.

The following program was rendered: Selections by Buch's Orchestra Recitation and Song by George and Martha Washington E.O. Himler performed "The Old Rugged Cross" with Irma Williams and Ursa Hunter.

Masquerade Ball was delightful event

To the strains of music rendered by a string band from Lafayette, over half a hundred couples "tripped the light fantastic toe" in the W.OW. hall last night from 8 oclock until after the midnight hour — the occasion being the initial masquerade ball of the 1913 Mardi Gras season, and it proved a most delightful event, a real treat to the many young ladies and gentlemen who participated in the pleasures of the evening.

The ball was given under the auspices of Meneau Tribe No 24 Improved Order of Red Men.
