A cicada molts its shell to become an adult whose sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs. After six to 10 weeks, the young cicada nymphs will hatch from their eggs, where they will then live underground and survive on the liquids from plant roots. Once they are fully developed, the cicada will emerge and molt its shell. Cicadas are found on all continents except for Antarctica.
