DEMOLITION OF ELTON PAROCHIAL SCHOOL BRINGS NOSTALGIA

ELTON - The demolishment of a religious landmark in Elton is bringing nostalgic memories covering a historical period of 50 years to at least three generations of Catholics.

The old frame building, originally built as a parochial school, has been known for the past several years as the Catholic Hall. The land will be kept by the church and eventually a new Catholic Hall will be built to complete the St. Paul building campaign that began in 1930.

Carnegie Building Will Be Completed in 30 Days

The new Carnegie Library now in course of erection in this city is nearing completion and the tile roofing is being put on this week, finishing the exterior of the structure.

As is generally known, Andrew Carnegie donated $10,000 for the erection of the library building, the city council agreeing to pay $1,000 per year for at least ten years as the running expenses of the public edifice.

Burglary repeated nightly for 4 months

According to Jennings City Police reports, every night for approximately four months, an unidentified person has reportedly been entering a resident on South Main Street in Jennings while the occupant is asleep, taking food and drinks and tearing a window shade.

The city police were notified Monday by the complainant about the burglary. By talking with the complainant, Officer Jimmy Davis learned that medicine and a key to the front door had been stolen and the front door chain was broken.

War On Rats Starts

The Jeff Davis parish rat campaign moves into Jennings today, after checking on the rodents last week in Lake Arthur, Elton, and Welsh.

Rat poison will be deposited at all business places and at any homes which so desire it, according to Ray Constant, parish sanitarian. It may take a week to cover the city.

C.A. Burdick of the Louisiana State Typhus Control Program and Luther Burchfield of the Federal Wildlife and Fisheries division will assist parish sanitarians and city personnel in the drive.

The city will finance the cost of the poison.

LAKE ARTHUR DOINGS

People from Jennings are to be seen here every day. Some come to fish, while others take a pleasant boat ride or sale on the lake. Will M. Hearne, representing the Daily Times Record of Jennings was here this week. Dwelling houses are continually going up in various parts of town. The Lake Arthur Rice Mill is doing a good business and is running continually and only shuts down when some repair work is necessary. The Odd Fellows of Lake Arthur will observe the national anniversary of the order by attending service in the Baptist church. Rev. EW. McLendon will preach the sermon.

Tornadoes hit cities named for one man

Fate takes strange twists.

So does a tornado.

By a strange twist of both fate and a tornado or two, Jennings and McComb, Miss., which suffered death and damage last Friday, the two largest towns were named for the same man.

Jennings McComb was his name.

He was a contractor and a friend of the early railroad men.

According to "The Birth of Jennings" written by Walter D. Morse, who was also a resident here, this man won the distinction of having two towns named after him.

OILFIELD STRIKE BACKFIRES ON WORKERS

The fire at the oil field was not the only excitement that prevailed during the afternoon. A part of fifteen men in the employ of F.A. Lynch, who is erecting some large steel tanks for the Crowley OIl & Mineral Company, came to the decision very abruptly that they were not securing wages to justify them in working and accordingly went to Mr. Lynch and demanded higher wages which Mr.

Horse And Buggy Not Gone Yet

Charles Miller and M. Kratzer of Roanoke were in town Saturday and bought a new buggy of the Cafall Implement Co., costing $90.

Someone predicted that when the automobile, truck and tractors came into use that the horse had seen its day, but he still holds his place in the hearts of many. It is true that a car is a more speedy way of traveling when the roads are not bad, but again when roads are knee-deep in mud, the man in the buggy behind a good horse doesn’t take a back seat for any car.
