Back-to-school often means a few “ugh” moments for parents. From early wakeup calls and forgotten lunchboxes to extracurricular chaos, meltdowns at homework time and picky dinner eaters, easy solutions in the kitchen can help lighten the to-do list.

As a way to boost community and family involvement while also adding a fun spin on reading, Lacassine High School brought together parents, grandparents, families and students recently for the school’s first annual Literacy Lunch initiative. The adults picked spots on the playground to spread out a blanket, enjoy lunch and read to their children.

Monday morning, we opened the office on South Jefferson Street, in the heart of downtown Perry, Fla., and noticed that one of two concrete planters flanking the front door of the newspaper office was missing a plant. There wasn’t dirt scattered around; the plant had been retrieved carefully, dirt intact, and was nowhere to be found.
