During the American Legion 7th District Spring Conference held on March 14, Department (Statelevel) Vice Commander A.J. Jones (right) recognized Eduardo Mendoza (left) of the Jennings Police Department (JPD) as the 7th District 2020 Police Officer of the Year. Mendoza was nominated for the award by the JPD and American Legion Post 19 in Jennings. The 7th District is comprised of 35 American Legion Posts located in eight southwest Louisiana parishes. Chief Danny Semmes of the JPD says of Officer Mendoza, “once in a career you come across an officer who truly shines through all aspects of law enforcement. This year I have selected an officer who came to us from another agency, and he was already trained in multiple facets of law enforcement. This officer, since day one, has always been a team player, always on time for his shift and filling in on other shifts so that no shift is shorthanded. This officer has a knack for finding the criminal element, having the record for this year for number of felony and misdemeanor arrests at 82 arrests for the year, even though he started with JPD in February of 2020. This officer leads the JPD in drug and related proceeds seizures. For his tireless efforts to help Jennings Police keep the Jennings community as a safe place to live, I nominate Officer Eduardo Mendoza as the 2020 Police Officer of the Year.”

Jones (right) recognized Ashley Navarre (left) of the Jennings Fire Department (JFD) as the 7th District 2020 Firefighter of the Year. Navarre was nominated for the award by the JFD and American Legion Post 19 in Jennings. The 7th District is comprised of located in eight southwest 35 American Legion Posts Louisiana parishes. Ashely has been affiliated with the JFD for over 28 years. He started his career with the JFD at the age of 14 as a junior firefighter. He worked his way through the ranks until he became a full-time firefighter at the age of 22. He has been the JFD Firefighter of the Year seven times and was a past Medic of the Year. He has been schooled in all aspects of fire science, and he is also a trained Emergency Medical Technician and a certified First Responder for Medical Treatment. He is also a trained diver. He is a member of the Jennings Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board and is currently assigned as JFD’s Chief Training Officer.

During the March meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings, the following Council members were recognized for their years of service to the Knights of Columbus.

When I was growing up, the word alternative described the pop trends of the day. It has another meaning to me now. Organic, natural pesticides and fertilizers and native plants are an increasingly popular alternative to synthetic chemicals and fertilizers as well as the heavy use of non-native plants and practices.

Coloring eggs is a beloved Easter tradition. Eggs long have been symbols of fertility and rebirth, making them fitting icons for spring.
