Friday, June 7, 2019

ELTON - The town here will soon see a weekend full of events and a chance to catch up with friends and family that have moved away from the community.

The Elton Coming Home Reunion will begin Friday, June 14, and continue Saturday, June 15, at Elton Town Park.

“Campers can start arriving on Friday afternoon around 5 p.m. to set up for the weekend,” said committee chairman Venessa Livingston-Cormier. “Tents, lawn chairs, ice chests and barbecue pits will be permitted as well.”

She reminds those coming in to please follow the committee’s directions when parking to ensure the safety of all involved.

Elton native and former Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Al Woods will sponsor a Fun Day on the Saturday.

“This will be for youth up to age 21,” said Livingston-Cormier. “Activities will include face painting, fun jumps, a water balloon war and slip-and-slide baseball. Al will also be giving away TV’s, gift cards, tablets, Xboxes and other prizes.”

A sauce picante cook-off is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, said Livingston-Cormier.

“Cooks can begin at 8 a.m. and food samples must be brought to the judging area by 11:30 a.m. and judging will take place shortly afterwards,” she said. “Entries will be judged on color, aroma, consistency and taste.”

The first place winner will receive an assorted gift basket. Second place will be awarded an apron with the Elton Coming Home Reunion logo on it. Third place will receive a chef’s towel with the same logo, she said.

The event will also include a raffle.

“Tickets are now on sale for $1,” said Livingston-Cormier. “Any committee member has tickets available or they can contact me for assistance.”

The drawing for the raffle will be held at 3:30 p.m. under the pavilion.

“First place winner will walk away with a 32-inch LED television. Second place prize was donated by Coushatta Casino Resort and includes a twonight stay at the Seven Clans Hotel and dinner for two at the Big Sky Steakhouse,” she said. “Mr T’s Meat Market has donated a gift certificate that includes a meat deal and two pounds of boudin for third place.”

She said there will be other door prizes given away throughout the day also.

According to Livingston-Cormier, a meet-and-greet will be held under the pavilion after the drawing followed by adult bingo.

“Bingo players will have a chance to win cash and other prizes,” she said.

Security will be on duty for the event. Music will provided by a DJ and there will be an ice truck on site.

Free soft drinks will also be available.

Livingston-Cormier said there will be a food truck and plenty of sweets on sale.

“We still have spots for booths available,” she said. The booths can include food or crafts. If they aren’t selling anything, booth set up is free. If they want to sell items for profit, there will be a $25 fee.”

Reunion t-shirts can be ordered up until Saturday, June 8.

“Shirts range from $10-12,” Livingston-Cormier said. “Contact Shirley Deville at (337) 532-4067 or Leeanne Ceasar at (337) 309-1392 to order.”
