As a way of continuing to bring the community together, two local residents are teaming up for some fall football games, cheerleaders included. Derrick Perkins and Towana King are back in action, providing entertainment for area youth.

“Because some families could not afford to send their children out of town, Derrick had the idea to organize some flag football games for those who are interested in playing. And what is a football game without cheerleaders?” said King. “This is what we love to do for our community, especially the kids.”

The flag football teams will be split into two age groups, one for boys ages 5-7 and a second group for those ages 8-10, said King.

“Girls in those same age ranges have signed up to cheer the teams on from the sidelines,” said King. “Newly recruited members of the Boss Moves organization will be on hand to teach the young girls a few cheer routines. The guys and other men from around the community will also be there to help coach the football players.”

Any child who would like to play is invited to join. Registration forms will be available at all schools across the city or can be picked up from Perkins or King.

There is a strict deadline of Sunday, Oct. 20.

“No exceptions will be made,” said King. “We will work to finalize teams and get some practice sessions going. The first practice will take place on Monday, Oct. 28.”

All practices and games will be held at the Marcus Cain Memorial Park. The first game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, she said.

There will be no cost for children who would like to participate and team shirts will be provided.

“To keep this a free event, we will be raising funds to provide the flags and T-shirts for each child,” said King. “Donations are now being accepted for those who would like to assist in making this a successful event for the children of our community.”

Concessions will be sold at each game.
