It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Martha Smith Leckelt announces her passing from this life on July 8, 2019, at the age of 87.

Funeral services for Martha Smith Leckelt will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings today, Thursday, July 11, 2019, at 10 a.m., with Reverend Gene Richard officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home beginning Wednesday, July 10, from 2:30-9 p.m. Visitation will resume today, Thursday, July 11, from 8 a.m. until the time of her service at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Martha was born in Enterprise, Miss., to James Edgar Smith and Elizabeth Leary Smith on Nov. 21, 1931. Martha was a homemaker who dedicated her life to the care of her family.

She loved gardening, sewing, going to the casino and playing bingo. Martha loved to visit with her family and friends. She loved life in general. Martha was a kind and loving woman who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Martha is survived by her two daughters, Evelyn Abshire (Joseph) of Evangeline and Alice Smith (Edwin) of Evangeline; her brother, John Smith of Australia; her three sisters, Claire Bell (Bob), Ruth Ebey and Wanda Stayton, all of Texas; her four grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob, Derek and Evret; and her five great-grandchildren, Jo-Jo, Noah, Jon Ryan, Rhoen and Stella.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elizabeth Smith; her husband, Herman Leckelt; her brother, James Smith; her sister; and her two grandchildren, Erick Smith and Marsha Abshire.

Carrying Martha to her final resting place will be Joseph “Junior” Abshire, Joseph Abshire, Jacob Smith, Derek Smith and Evret Smith.
