The family and friends of Melvin Cormier are mourning the loss of their loved one who was called from this life on Jan. 29, 2020, at the age of 91.

Funeral services for Melvin Cormier, 91, of Welsh were held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at 2 p.m., with Brother Darrel Hieronymus officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. until the time of his funeral service.

Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery with Full Military Rites.

Melvin was born in Welsh to Aurelion Cormier and Lucile Daigle Cormier on Nov. 21, 1928. Melvin worked as an auto mechanic for Hebert and LeBleu for 35 years before retiring. He loved making knives and watching Western movies.

Melvin’s greatest joys came from the time spent making memories with all of his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He was a kind and loving man who was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Melvin is survived by his son, Robert “Bobby” Cormier (Carla) of Welsh; his grandson, Ben Cormier (Candice Basone) of Welsh; his granddaughter, Brooke Benoit (Golden) of Welsh; his eight great-grandchildren, Kaden, Meya, Benjamin, Piper, Wyatt, Chance, Collin and Cason; his two brothers, Burley Cormier of Jennings and Wilford Cormier of Beaumont, Texas; and his sister, Ida Ardoin of Jennings.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Aurelion and Lucile Cormier; his beloved wife, Helena Stelly Cormier; two sisters; and three brothers.

Those chosen to honor Melvin as his pallbearers will be Ben Cormier, Kaden Cormier, Michael Cormier, David Cormier, Brian Presley and Golden Benoit.
