Rodney Lee Burgess, a 31-year resident of Charenton, passed away at the age of 65 on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge following a brief illness.

The family asks that visiting hours be observed today, Wednesday, July 24, 2019, from 6-9 p.m. at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin, with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 7 p.m. Visiting hours will resume Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 8 a.m., continuing until time of eulogy at 10:40 a.m. and followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service conducted by Father Christopher Cambre.

Following the funeral service, in keeping with Rodney’s wishes, he will be cremated.

Rodney was born in New Iberia on Monday, April 12, 1954, the sixth child of 13 siblings. He was a fun-loving guy who enjoyed cutting up with family and friends. Some of his favorite pastimes were dancing his heart out while listening to Cajun music and going on spontaneous road trips. Nothing, though, put a smile on his face more than spending time with his family, especially when his grandchildren were around. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those he leaves to cherish his memory include his wife of 38 years, Julie McNeal Burgess; seven children, Chad Burgess and his wife Katrina, Christina Fontenot and her husband Luke, Jessica Brown, Jennifer Mora, Hunter Burgess, Kacey Burgess and Chance “Poopie” Burgess and his wife Tasia; 21 grandchildren, Noah, Gabriella, Garrett, Ky’a, Caroline, Daniel, Paige, Skylar, Kendall, Evan, GraceAnn, Brennan, Reese, Addison, Avery, Jackson, AnaLaysha, Xavier, Roeman, Cy and Chip; seven greatgrandchildren, Phoenix, Reid, Luke, Ty’Lyn, LayLa, Skarlett and Hassen; 10 siblings, Leroy McLean “Maxie” Burgess, Richard Burgess, Ronald Burgess, Donald Crochet, Cheries Burgess, Edward Burgess, Ruth Ann Galtier, Chris Burgess, Rebecca Anderson and Johnny Burgess; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Adam Burgess Sr. and Lillie Mae LeBlanc Burgess; and two siblings, Harvey Adam Burgess Jr. and Donna Lynn Burgess.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Burgess, Hunter Burgess, Chance “Poopie” Burgess, Daniel Daigle, Evan Cormier, Brennan Brown, Reese Brown, Noah Burgess, Garrett Burgess and Xavier Burgess.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the Chitimacha Fire Department and Police Department for being there for them in their time of need.
