Savilla Lambousy Mamoulides

On Feb. 1, 2022, Savilla passed peacefully at the age of 91, surrounded by family following a stroke.

Visitation will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 4, 2022, at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, located in Byrd Hall in Metairie (masks required).

There will be a graveside service at noon Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley.

Graveside services have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home of Crowley.

Savilla was born in Jennings, the daughter of Gregory and Athanasia Lambousy and sister of George, Mary, Gloria and Pete Lambousy. She graduated from SLI in Lafayette (now ULL), where she was a proud president of the Red Jackets and a leader in the Episcopalian student group. She then travelled throughout South Louisiana, teaching with the Louisiana Agricultural Extension Service.

She married the love of her life, John Mamoulides, 67 years ago. They travelled across America together during his service in the Air Force and made many friends along the way.

Savilla was an amazing teacher. While in California, she taught 40 first grade students in one classroom. After settling in Metairie, Savilla drove across the Mississippi River Bridge every day to teach fourth graders in Westwego.

She served on the Vestry at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church and she served as a delegate in the 1973 Louisiana Constitutional Convention. She was also appointed by the Governor to a statewide task force and she served as a (victorious) Presidential campaign coordinator.

Savilla’s genuine love of people and her elegance of manner made everyone around her feel that she was a friend who would fight for them through any storm. Faithful, abiding love is her gift to all of us. During the years she shared with her beloved John, their love was always evident.

She was so proud of her granddaughters, Sarah and Alexa, and would have you believe that they set every world record. As Savilla would point out to anyone who would listen, “My grandchildren are amazing. They were both National Merit Scholars. The first one graduated with honors from Harvard and then Law School at Duke. The youngest graduated with honors from NYU. They are smarter and more beautiful each time I see them.” We think Sarah and Alexa got their wit and intellect from their Grandmother Savilla. They might have gotten some drive and determination from their grandfather John, but certainly their grace and kindness are from Savilla.

Savilla is survived by her precious husband, John; daughter Carola (John Milkovich and their daughter Sarah); son Mitchell (Barbara Mamoulides and their daughter Alexa); sister Gloria Lambousy and all her nieces and nephews.

Two of Savilla’s children, Joan Marie and Gregory, preceded her to heaven.
