The family and friends of Shirley Ann Spell Istre are mourning the loss of their loved one who was called from this life on March 20, 2022, at the age of 78.

Funeral services for Shirley Ann Spell Istre, 78, of Jennings will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings, with Father Keith Pellerin officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning Friday, March 25, 2022, from 3-8 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. by Susan Matt. Visitation will resume Saturday, March 26, 2022, from 8 a.m. until the time of her service at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in LeBlanc Cemetery.

Shirley was born in Sulphur to Walter Lee Spell and Mary Johnson on Oct. 9, 1943. She was a homemaker who dedicated her life to the care of her family.

Shirley was a faithful parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed family gatherings, sewing, quilting or doing other crafts, as well as playing Bingo. She was a loving and kindhearted woman and will be immensely missed by all who loved her.

Those left to cherish the memories of Shirley are four sons, Eddie (Kelly) Istre of Jennings, Walter Istre of Lake Arthur, Melvin (Cindy) Istre of LaRose and Robert (Jena) Istre of Cuttoff; her daughter, Olite (Kirk) Guillory of Jennings; her 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bobby (Ruth) Spell of Basile.

Shirley is now with the family that preceded in death, including her husband, Melvin “T-Black” Istre; her father, Walter Spell; her mother, Mary Johnson Spell; two brothers, Earl Spell and Raymond Spell; and one grandson, Robbie J. Istre.

Those chosen to honor Shirley as her pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kegan Istre, Devon Istre, Chaz Istre, Jacob Guillory, Derek Istre, Ryan Istre, Allen Istre and Al Charpentier. Honorary pallbearers will be Dana Istre, Allison Guillory, Janae’ Charpentier, Skie Istre and Naomi Istre.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the incredible doctors, nurses and staff members of Jennings American Legion Hospital, Jeff Davis Living Center, Heart of Hospice and and Hospice of Acadiana for the exceptional care and attention given to their mom.
