Funeral services for Rev. Melton Alfred, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, in Union Baptist Church, with Rev. Gerald Perkins, Sr. officiating. Visitation will be held in the church on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Peterson Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary.

Rev. Alfred entered into eternal rest Friday, April 13, 2018, in Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home.

He was a native of Opelousas and lived in Jennings most of his life. He was a 1952 graduate of Grambling State University. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict and received a honorable discharge after two years of service. He earned a Master’s Degree from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. In 1986, he earned a Master of Divinity Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a science teacher for 30 years in the Jeff Davis Parish School System and served on the Jeff Davis Police Juror for 28 years. Rev. Alfred served as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Lake Arthur.

Reverend Alfred is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Cora Lee Keyes-Alfred; one daughter, Sharon (Houston) Alfred-Jackson; one brother, Peter (Alice) Alfred; one daughter-in-law, Linda Alfred; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
