The Faith Tabernacle church located at the corner of Doyle and Jefferson streets in the Jennings was to the Southside gang, non-denominationaL The gang albeit selfish knew this was one of the only opportunities to get a new football, basketball or baseball glove. The Christmas party was the largest program during that period that served all the needy kids in the parish. Rev. James and Mrs. Waltrip were the ministers of the church, and Mrs. Mac Richard (Davis’s mom) and Mrs. Finerty (Kathleen’s mom) were the primary coordinators of the annual program. Donations of toys and clothes were collected during the year to distribute at the party.
Everlasting friendships are created with the guys you bled, fought and cried with. This senior class will be friends forever. They worked and played with heart and intensity. No, it did not end like they would have liked but these Bulldogs made us proud. Only one team is jubilant when the season is over. Every other team in the playoffs suffers the “agony of defeat.”
