For nearly 50 years, Black History Month has been celebrated in the U.S. The story took root when Carter G. Woodson, a Harvardtrained historian, and minister Jesse Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1926. The official monthlong celebration did not begin, however, until 1976, and is widely recognized as a time to highlight the achievements of Black Americans.
On Feb. 14, members of Knights of Columbus (KC) Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings Mike Donnelly (from left), Jimmy Richard, Horace Naquin, Mason Lejeune, James Miller, Wayne Bergeaux, Mike Gary and Frank Angelle, presented a $500 donation to Robert Richard and Ron Bertrand from Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana in Lake Charles. The organization operates supply distribution centers every month at 12 sites in the Diocese of Lake Charles, including St. Mary’s Center in Jennings, where they come once a month to distribute supplies to qualified families from in and around Jennings. The Knights made the donation to Catholic Charities as part of the KC Food for Families Program sponsored by the Knights’ international headquarters. Anyone wishing to donate to Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana can call the Lake Charles office at 337439-7436.
