When most families think of holiday cooking, they typically picture baked goods and time spent in the kitchen near the oven.

Mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish, capable of being paired with meats, poultry and fish. Few meals wouldn’t benefit from the addition of creamy mashed potatoes.

“Do you have grandchildren?” I asked with a kind and lilting voice, after being introduced to my newest cousin (by marriage) when we gathered in Alabama for Thanksgiving.

Damn you, Walcott! Damn you! And the pirogue that you sailed in on!
