T his month time is being dedicated by various organizations around the nation to paying homage to the many contributions made by women in American History.

R egardless of how bitter the immigration argument – and the debate routinely sinks to new hostility lows – everyone should agree that open borders must not be allowed to disrupt public education.

A s I write, I’m about to speak for the second time in a week about the media. I almost turned down both invitations to speak at two very different conferences, because, despite working in the press, I don’t think much about the media. But early on in my life as an opinion journalist, I realized criticizing the mainstream media — “the liberal media” — could be something of an easy parlor game among conservatives. The media tends to be more secular and liberal than my own outlook. Why complain? Why not engage instead?

W hen my three semi-grown daughters were young (and since I work in the lucrative world of public education), we’d spend our spring break holidays riding bikes to the park, making dad-sized pillow forts in the living room, and raiding the gift shop at the zoo.

T he sun is shining today and Spring is upon us.

I n less than a month, I will be celebrating the ruby jubilee of my birth. In other words, I will be turning the big 4-0 and I don’t know how to feel about it exactly.
