In 1986, Congress passed Public Law 99-244, which designated February 1986 as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month.” President Gerald Ford called upon the public that year to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

There has been an increasingly high number of grandparents raising their grandchildren in the U.S. over the last few years. It’s becoming more common for a multitude of reasons including, poverty, low education, abuse, drug use, lack of responsibility or any combination of these. They need not only help from the community but also resources to assist them through unexpected hard times.

The arts unify us regardless of age, race or ethnicity.

While the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (BESE) heads back to the drawing board to lay out early education standards for the state, parish residents can rest easy knowing that there are several organizations that are and have been invested in ensuring that the youngest residents in our community are set up for success.
