Cajun Family Chapter President Aaron Istre speaks to participants of the first annual Courir de Mardi Gras children’s chicken run about the history and tradition of the event. He said people would go door-to-door, dressed in disguise, singing old Cajun French songs and beg for ingredients to make a gumbo. Istre also taught the kids to say “cinq-sous” to beg for nickels in French. The children were split into groups and made multiple stops at neighboring homes where the owners would bring out one chicken or rooster to chase. Once the bird was set loose, kids chased it all over the owner’s yards until it was finally caught. The winners later received trophies and everyone enjoyed gumbo while listening to Cajun music.
