WELSH — Town officials here recently decided to move forward with a new program through the town’s electric authority and are one step closer to adopting standards for its electric service.
On August 7, the nation recognized those awarded the Purple Heart for their military service. The Purple Heart medal was originally the Badge of Military Merit, created by George Washington in 1782. Considered to be the first military decoration and the Purple Heart’s predecessor, it was bestowed as a purple cloth in the shape of a heart with the word Merit stitched across it, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. The medal as it is today, was commissioned in 1932 to honor the bicentennial of Washington.
Many students and parents can check one back-to-school item off their list this year. Three local community organizations, with the support of Congressman Clay Higgins, have come together to give back to area students in need of a new backpack.

ELTON — Town officials here are warning utility customers the current water bills for the Town of Elton do not reflect July’s readings. The numbers for the current bill were not uploaded correctly with the present read, which caused the water bills to be inaccurate. New water bills reflecting the accurate amounts were mailed on Monday. Officials ask residents to hold off on paying bills until they receive the new bill in the mail. Additionally, they apologize for any inconvenience the mix-up may have caused.
