MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama lawmakers have moved closer to approving protections for fertility clinics. Three IVF providers in Alabama paused services after the state Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were considered “extrauterine children” under the state wrongful death law. Lawmakers in both chambers on Thursday advanced legislation that should shield IVF providers from civil lawsuits and prosecution for the “damage to or death of an embryo” during IVF services. Legislators are hoping to get the measures approved by early next week while they weigh whether additional action is needed.
