McIlroy suffers worst Match Play loss in 10 years

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Rory McIlroy hasn’t walked off the course this early in 10 years at the Dell Technologies Match Play. Ian Poulter had a lot to do with that. He hit two pivotal shots to pull away and applied enough pressure on the other holes that McIlroy had to be a lot sharper than he was Wednesday at Austin Country Club.

BELL CITY — The Lake Arthur Tigers swept a pair of games at the Bell City Tournament over the weekend by defeating the Lacassine Cardinals 4-0, then turned around and knocked off Class B’s No. 1 team in the Elizabeth Bulldogs 4-3 in walk-off fashion in their second game. The wins moved the Tigers to 11-4 on the season.

BELL CITY — The Lacassine Cardinals avenged an early-season loss to Evans High School at the recent Bell City Tournament by claiming a 10-1 win. The Cardinals used a one-hit gem by junior Jace Bageux on the mound, and the offense pounded out 11 hits to produce their 10 run out-burst. Bageux went the distance on the hill, allowing only a single run on one hit and struck out 13 on a miniscule 92 pitches. The junior hurler also didn’t allow a single free pass in the contest. Sophomores Seth and Kole Bourgeois led the Cardinal bats by combining for five hits and four RBI’s, while junior Dylan Duran also drove in three runs in the win.

ERATH - For the second straight game, the Jennings Bulldogs spotted their opponent an early lead. But like the day before in their win over Comeaux, the Dogs came roaring back to capture a win. This time, in dominant fashion, as they blasted the Kaplan Pirates by a final of 12-2 via the 10-run rule in six innings. With the game tied just 1-1 after four complete, Jennings erupted for six runs in the fifth frame and five in the sixth to end the contest early.

LSU softball downs Texas A&M to even series

BATON ROUGE — The No. 12 LSU softball team defeated Texas A&M 6-1 in game two to even the series Sunday afternoon in Tiger Park The Tigers move to 17-8 on the season while A&M falls to 20-4 on the year. The Tigers are now 3-2 in the SEC and the Aggies move to 1-1.

DOGS RALLY FOR WIN OVER 5A COMEAUX

LAFAYETTE — The Jennings Bulldogs picked up a huge road win Thursday afternoon by rallying to defeat the 5A Comeaux Spartans 6-4 in a non-district clash. The Dogs fell behind 4-0 in the first three frames, but scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and a single run in the seventh to walk away with the win. Jennings improves its overall record to 6-6 on the year, while Comeaux dropped to 13-4.

Lady Dogs smash through Westlake 20-7

The Jennings Lady Bulldog softball team scored early and often on their way to a 20-7 win over the visiting Westlake Lady Rams Thursday. Though both teams are in district 4-3A, the game did not count as a district game.
