The Lacassine Lady Cardinal softball team made the three-hour trip north to play the Converse Lady Wildcats in the second round of the Class B playoffs Thursday. Converse used three pitchers in their attempt to shut down the Cardinals bats. Lacassine stayed with starting pitcher Taylor Talbott to give the Cardinals a 9-7 win to advance to the quarterfinal.
IOWA – The No.9-ranked Lacassine Lady Cardinals disposed of No.24 Castor in the opening round of the Class B state softball playoffs by a final of 11-7 at the Iowa Recreation Department. The Lady Cards advanced to take on No. 8 Converse in a Regional Round contest Thursday afternoon on the road. The win moved Lacassine’s overall record to 19-11. The Lady Cardinals pounded out 10 hits in the win, and overcame an early 4-2 deficit to claim their playoff victory. Taylor Talbott got the win in the circle for Lacassine by going all seven innings. She allowed seven runs on eight hits and struck out three. Libby Guidry, Hannah Fontenot and Addison Hollier paced the Lacassine offense by each collecting two hits each, and catcher Giselle Fuentes launched a 2-run bomb. After Castor picked up a run in the top of the first frame, Lacassine responded with a pair in the bottom. Alexis Shelton drew a lead off walk, and Guidry was hit by a pitch. Both came around to score on throwing errors by Castor to make it 2-1. Castor responded with a 3-spot in the top of the third frame to make it a 4-2 contest, but the Lady Cards busted out a 5-spot in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 advantage.
After starting the season at 5-11, the Jennings Bulldogs have turned their season around and saved their best baseball for the second half of the season to put themselves in the Top-10 in Class 3A heading towards the LHSAA state playoffs. At one point the Dogs reeled off six consecutive wins, finished as the district 4-3A runner-up with an impressive 7-3 record and currently sit at No. 8 in the latest 3A power ratings. Jennings played their final regular season contest on Friday night against the Kinder Yellow Jackets, and await the playoff bracket release this week. The Dogs will undoubtedly host a first round playoff match-up, and if they can advance past that one, could host a Regional Round best-of-three series at Danny Reed Field.
Kaitlyn Sawyer brought home a first-place win in the 1600m race at the recent 2022 7-B Track Meet beating her personal record with a time of 5:38. Sawyer secured the school record in this event last year as a 7th grader with a time of 5:45 shattering the previous record holder’s time of 6.08 set in 2015. She will compete in the Regional Track Meet later this month. Sawyer is an 8th grader at Hathaway High School.
WELSH – A town native recently competed in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, bringing home a silver medal.

WELSH — The Avoyelles Public Charter Lady Vikings softball team came into town and pillaged the homestanding Welsh Lady Greyhounds by a 14-3 score in the bi-district round of the class 2-A nonselect playoffs. The Lady Vikings, now 11-12 for the season, will host number one ranked Many in the regional round of the playoffs. Avoyelles Charter entered the playoffs as the seventeenth ranked team.
