HATHAWAY — There are high school students all over the state who play multiple sports and maintain high gradepoint- averages, but it would be tough to find one individual who competes in five and has maintained a perfect 4.0. In Jeff Davis Parish, one would have to look no further than right down the road in Hathaway (HHS) to seek out Andrew Nguyen. The senior holds down letters in five different athletic events at HHS and has always continued to strive in the classroom since stepping foot in the school as a youngster. Nguyen competes, and excels, in basketball, tennis, track and field, swim and baseball. Despite the rigors of juggling both, Nguyen mentioned that maintaining his superlative grade point average has been the biggest obstacle he has overcome in his time as an athlete.

Three knee surgeries and a plethora of broken bones would be enough to make any athlete hang up their spikes. However, for one Jennings softball player, it’s been a mere bump in the road in what has become an illustrious career. Kylie Price is a senior at Jennings High School and has gone through all of those aforementioned injuries and has still managed to rack up awards along with carrying a whopping 4.12 grade point average throughout her high school days. She is a three-sport student-athlete who also plays volleyball and throws the javelin for the Lady Bulldog track team. Price got into the subject of how she started playing softball, but it came from a non-competitive baseball league to start.

WELSH — The Welsh Greyhounds have seen a numerous amount of talented quarterbacks come through their program over the years. This year will be no different as senior quarterback Jonovan Begnaud will again take his place behind center for the second consecutive season. The talented Begnaud racked up 2,109 all-purpose yards a season ago in which the Hounds advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the Division IV playoffs before falling to the Logansport Tigers in a closely contested match-up. High hopes are again on the minds of Greyhound fans in 2024, and if there is to be another run this coming season, Begnaud will be one of the key cogs in leading the charge. The 6’2, 180-pound speedster can do it with both his legs and his arm.
