N.O. budget issues prompt short-lived furlough threat

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans’ clerk of criminal district court announced a furlough Friday that would’ve crippled the city’s criminal justice system, only to rescind the threat the next day.

The moves by Orleans Parish Clerk of Criminal District Court Arthur Morrell are part of an ongoing budget dispute with the city, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported. Morrell said he plans to to discuss the furlough and dispute with the chief judge of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court on Monday, the same day the furlough would’ve gone into effect.

No. 3 Lady Tigers edge No.2 Hathaway

HATHAWAY - Friday night’s clash between Class 2A’s No. 3-ranked Lake Arthur Lady Tigers (LAHS) and Class B’s No. 2-ranked Hathaway Lady Hornets (HHS) lived up to all of the expectations as being billed as one of the most marquee match-ups so far this 2019-2020 season. However, the Lady Tigers used a perfect overtime at the charity stripe to claim a highly passionate 54-52 in-parish battle over the Lady Hornets.

Strong fourth quarter lifts Hornets over Tigers 55-51

HATHAWAY - The No. 2-ranked Hathaway Hornets edged the No. 4-ranked Lake Arthur Tigers in a tightly contested game at Charles F. Groth Gymnasium Friday night by a final of 55-51 in a back-and-forth affair.

Lake Arthur roared into the game, swiping the tip. Hornets (19-4) senior Colby Augustine pushed the Hornets to a 3-0 lead at the 6:23 mark, popping a triple. At 5:24, Lake Arthur senior Tristan Doucet flipped a triple, tying the board at 3-3. Hathaway pulled ahead, but at the 1:09 mark, both teams were locked at 13-13. The Tigers shot one last double, bringing the game 15-13.

Lady Cards sweep through JBHS Tourney with 3-0 mark

JOHNSON BAYOU - THE Lacasssine Lady Cardinals (LHS) swept a trio of contests at the Johnson Bayou High School (JBHS) Tournament over the weekend to move their impressive mark to 22-4. LHS defeated the hosts on Friday, and then went on to sweep a pair of contests from South Cameron (SCHS) and Hackberry (HHS) on Saturday in blowout fashion.

Cardinals grab pair of wins in Johnson Bayou

JOHNSON BAYOU – The Lacasssine Cardinals (LHS) picked up two big wins at the Johnson Bayou High School (JBHS) Basketball Tournament over the weekend. The Cards blasted the host Rebels, and then came from behind to defeat Hackberry (HHS) in a nipand-tuck contest by a final of 63-62. The pair of wins improved the Cardinals’ record to 10-15 on the season as they move closer to the start of league play.

Boil advisory issued for LA residents

LAKE ARTHUR - Town officials have issued a boil advisory for all residents until further notice.

“Mayor Sherry Crochet said she received a notification on Saturday night, which alerted us to a leak in one of our main water lines,” said town clerk Mindy Marcantel. “We decided to issue the boil advisory for all residents throughout the town as a safety precaution.”

Marcantel said the broken line was located near Fourth Street.

LaPoint honored by DA, court

After 29 years of work, Assistant District Attorney Bennett LaPoint will retire from his position at the end of this month.

His final day to handle court cases in the 31st Judicial District Court was Monday. During a recess, District Attorney Michael Cassidy said a few words about his longtime colleague and brother-in-law.

Class 2A’s No. 3-ranked Lake Arthur Lady Tigers and Class B’s No. 2-ranked Hathaway Lady Hornets met on the court for a much anticipated match-up Friday night. The Lady Tigers edged out Hathaway by a score of 54-52.

GIRLS WHO CODE

WELSH - Young girls who may be interested in a computer science career will have an opportunity to learn a few basic skills through a program being offered at the Welsh Library. Beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 15, girls can meet for after school sessions of Girls Who Code.

“We want to show these young girls that they have other career choice options available to them,” said assistant branch manager Laci Cormier. “So far, our community has expressed a lot of interest in the program and we are happy to offer this education for our local youth.”
