NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are falling as Wall Street questions whether the U.S. job market has slowed by just enough to convince the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates soon to help the economy, or by so much that a recession may be on the way. After jumping to an early gain, the S&P 500 erased it and fell 0.6% Friday from the all-time high it set the day before. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 334 points, and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.5%. The action was stronger in the bond market, where Treasury yields tumbled after the latest weaker-thanexpected report on the job market.
(The Center Square) — U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., vigorously defended his leadership and President Donald Trump’s health care agenda in the face of intense questioning from both Democrats and Republicans at a Senate committee hearing. The secretary was brought in for questioning at least in part due to his firing of the Trump-appointed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director, Susan Monarez, who held her post for less than a month. But senators interrogated Kennedy over a number of topics with marked hostility – even from some Republicans – accusing him of endangering public health, politicizing science and going back on his word.
IOWA — The Louisiana State Police are reaching out to the public for help with identifying a vehicle involved in a fatal accident.
LAKE ARTHUR ─— Lake Arthur Fire Chief Justin “Joe” Abshire has stepped down from his position after more than 25 years of service to the town.
The proverbial cherry on top was placed at Jerry Simmons Stadium Friday, mere hours before the first Bulldog home game of the season. The new press box was one of the last big-ticket items for the stadium renovation.
