Over the weekend, nearly 500 Native American dancers competed in the 27th annual Coushatta Powwow. In addition to dancers, native drum circles from tribes across the nation attended, playing traditional music for the competitors to dance.

LAKE ARTHUR — The board of alderman recently tabled a motion to grant a peddler license for Rita’s Creole Family Kitchen food truck. The food truck business is owned by Rita Fields of Lake Charles that would have barbeque, seafood and snow cones available when the truck is located in the town. But it is not intended as a permanent venue as of now, according to Mayor Sampson “Poncho” Lejeune.

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., recently announced 27,842 unclaimed property checks totaling $5.1 million will be mailed out on Thursday, June 13.
The Louisiana Federation of American Women in association with the Jeff Davis Parish Republican Women held a scholarship award assembly at their recent meeting. Graduating students from throughout the parish wrote essays on election integrity, competing for a first-place prize of $500, second place of $300 and third place of $200. Students do not have to be Republican or female to compete for the essay scholarships. Criteria is based on senior students’ GPA, grammar, essay content and quality, community involvement and personal statement.
