BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s capital city has a new police chief. Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome on Thursday named Thomas Morse Jr. to lead the city’s police department. He replaces Chief Murphy Paul, who announced his retirement in July. Morse was one of five finalists for the job. He currently serves as commander of training services and is a member of the department’s Special Response Team, also known as SWAT. The Advocate reports Morse will assume his new post starting in January.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says the government will be holding the airlines accountable to operate smoothly and treat passengers well if there are disruptions. Auto club AAA forecasts that 115 million people in the U.S. will go 50 miles or more from home between Saturday and New Year’s Day. That's up 2% over last year. Most of those people will drive, and they will save a bit on gasoline, compared with a year ago.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Like Christmas trees, Santa and reindeer, the poinsettia has long been a ubiquitous symbol of the holidays in the U.S. and Europe. But nearly 200 years after the plant with the bright crimson leaves was introduced in the U.S., attention is again turning to the poinsettia’s origins and the checkered history of its namesake. The name “poinsettia” comes from the amateur botanist and statesman Joel Roberts Poinsett, who happened upon the plant during his tenure as the first U.S. minister to a newly independent Mexico. But because of his difficult history as a slaveholder and secretary of war who helped to oversee the forced removal of Native Americans, some fans of the plant would rather use its name among Nahuatlspeaking communities of Mexico: cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-SHO-sheet).
