(AP) — During the season of Lent, Christians honor the 40 days that Jesus fasted in the desert by observing their own fasting. The Jefferson Davis Republican Women were joined by the LSUE senior nursing students to bring valentines and cookies to the veterans at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home, on Friday, February 16. This is the annual valentines project for the JDRW, and a community service project for the students. They gathered earlier in the day to assemble the bags of cookies, and students from Jennings Elementary School and the student nurses provided the valentines. Both groups enjoyed the event as much as the veterans did.

LAKE CHARLES —United Way of Southwest Louisiana’s 3rd Annual Battle for the Paddle cookoff event is set for Thursday, March 14 at the Lake Charles Civic Center Amphitheatre, located at 1111 Bord du Lac Dr. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and feature a cookoff competition between more than 20 teams who will prepare jambalaya and pasta-laya for public taste testing.
